My take on the popular orange beef and broccoli dish that everybody likes to order at their local Chinese take out restaurant. Mine doesn’t have any msg or weird orange color gravy. I was a bit lazy and decided to cook it in a frying pan. although the wok would probably work best in making this dish.


1 lb of Marinade flank steak or Top Sirloin steak ( whatever you find is the best value)

For the beef only:  2 pinches of Salt, pepper,  1 tsp oil,  garlic, light  2 TBSP soy sauce, dark soy sauce, sugar,  1 Tsp sesame seed oil and Shaoxing wine. Do I ever measure this stuff NO! But for beginners I guess this would be a good start for measurements.

2 heads of broccoli ( rinsed and cut into bite size pieces)

3 tangerines ( deseed it if they are not seedless and rinse the skin )

1/2 cup water

2 TBSP corn starch

2-3  pinches salt and black pepper

Cutting the beef: Slice the beef against the grain into pieces. Against the grain means if you study the in line on a steak you need to turn the meat around to cut opposite direction and on a slant. This helps to break down the tissue. We aim to have meat that is easy to chew.

In a bowl you want to add all of the seasonings and mix well to combine. Allow to marinade at least for 30 minutes in the refrigerator or 1 hour for best flavor.


Cut and rinse thoroughly. Taking a pot fill it with water half way and boil the water. Add some salt to the water. You can either steam or boil the broccoli for about 8 minutes and then shock it ice cold water to stop the cooking process. Strain the broccoli leave in the colander to dry. You will cook the broccoli again in the stir fry so keep the texture and color of the broccoli.


  • In a frying hot wok add cooking oil and allow it to get hot. Taking your beef gently add the beef hear it sizzle stir until the beef is brown. Turn the heat down to a lower simmer.
  • Make the gravy, add 2 TBSP of cornstarch and dissolve it with 1/2 cup of cold water and light soy sauce.   Set that aside do not put into the wok just yet.
  • Taking the broccoli add to the frying pan and mix it with the beef and add the gravy mixture. Take one tangerine and squeeze the juice into the sauce and if you like zest the tangerine too. Allow the liquids to thicken.
  • Finally, add slices of tangerines skin on and all to give more flavor. Allow it to cook it but 1 minute more and cut the heat. Serve up with some Jasmine rice or brown rice it’s totally up to you.
