Steam Spare Ribs in Clay pot
Simple and easy clay pot cooking. I don’t use my clay pot enough, but I should because it does a great job steaming my spare ribs. A Chinese clay pot is easy to find at your local Asian market. They come in small. medium and large at various prices. However, they won’t be too expensive. Mine is a medium size and set me back about $30 and it’s been with me for about 6 years now and I love it. Let’s get this started!
1 lb of spare ribs (Asian Markets have them packaged and ready to go)
2 tsp of minced garlic
1 TBSP of black bean garlic sauce
1 tsp of sugar
1 tsp of canola oil
1 tsp of sesame seed oil
2 TBSP of soy sauce
3 large pinches of kosher salt
2 pinches of black pepper
3 green scallions sliced up for garnish
- In a mixing bowl add the spare ribs and all the marinade ingredients listed into the mixing bowl with the spare ribs and let it sit in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to 1 hour for full flavor.
- After the ribs have been sitting in the mixing bowl place into the clay pot and place the clay pot onto of the stove top, turn it to medium high heat. Put the lid on so it can steam properly. Time it for about 20 minutes. Then turn the burner down to a low simmer and cook for about another 20 minutes. So far 40 minutes total. This can take up to an hour or more depending on how you like the tenderness of the spareribs and the flavor.
- Check on the ribs, it might not be cooked all the way and the meat has to be easily falling off the bones. If it is not cooked through let it continue to cook on low simmer for another 15 minutes. Always remember to put the lid back on so the juices can flow inside the clay pot cooking the spare ribs.
- At this time the spare ribs will be cooked safely enough for you to try the sparerib to see if it’s flavorful enough. If it is then you’re ready to eat them with a hot bowl of rice. But if the spare ribs are not flavorful enough for you add about another 1 tsp of salt and pepper and splash of soy sauce; mix well and let it simmer for another 5 minutes on low. After that it should be good to go! This dish is easy to make it takes time, but it’s well worth the efforts and you can do chores and other things while you’re in the kitchen cooking up a warm delicious meal.
